> When did it get to be the end of July? Sweet puppies.

> US officials have announced that they believe al Qaeda is “on the brink of collapse.”

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta declared during a recent visit to Afghanistan that “we’re within reach of strategically defeating al-Qaeda.” The comment was dismissed by skeptics as an attempt to energize troops while defending the administration’s decision to wind down a decade-old war.

But senior U.S. officials from the CIA, the National Counterterrorism Center and other agencies have expressed similar views in classified intelligence reports and closed-door briefings on Capitol Hill, officials said.

> And the Colbert Report has a pretty great segment on the apparent willingness of many, many journalists (and bloggers – mea culpa) to hear about an explosion and figure it was al Qaeda. Oops. (“I say, by going with their guts, these journalists were able to get the story they wanted and scoop reality. …So if you’re pulling a news report completely out of your ass, it’s safer to go with Muslim. That’s not prejudice – it’s probability!”)

> Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak is apparently “depressed and refusing food,” which is the sort of language one typically hears regarding dolphins in captivity. On the other hand, captive dolphins aren’t usually scheduled to stand trial in a week or so after ruling moderately-sized countries with for 34 years.

> Apparently North Korea wants a peace treaty with the US? And apparently they’ve done this before? Huh.

> India’s first legally-married lesbian couple have been given 24-hour protection. As Jack commented, from the headline alone, it sounds at bit like they were given a head start. In addition to police protection, they’ve been moved to a safe house.

> You’ve seen Harry Potter recut as a teen movie, right? Good.

> You can now get Spanx “athletic pants.” I am not making this up.

> Hot dang. I want a swimsuit I can use to strike matches.

> If I may have your attention, please: the first episode of second half of series six of Doctor Who airs Aug. 27. In the meantime, have a trailer.
