> Right, so the Wikileaked Guantanamo files that I touched on (but, um, didn’t link to? Oops) yesterday…it gets worse. Prisoners included an 89-year old Afghan man suffering from senile dementia and a 14-year old boy who had been a kidnap victim; the latter was transported to Cuba for “his possible knowledge of Taliban…local leaders.” More than 100 captives were reported by their captors to have psychotic or depressive illness; an unreported number attempted suicide. One man was held based on knowledge of the region of Kabul – information he obtained because he was a taxi driver in the region. An Al Jazeera journalist was held for six years and interrogated for information regarding the network. This most recent batch of leaked files were those sent to Wikileaks by Bradley Manning.

(They hate us for our freedoms.)

> Speaking of which, and ironically enough: a document authored by two members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff indicates that “Americans are overreacting to Islamic extremism, underinvesting in their youth, and failing to embrace the sense of competition and opportunity that made America a world power. The United States has been increasingly consumed by seeing the world through the lens of threat, while failing to understand that influence, competitiveness, and innovation are the key to advancing American interests in the modern world.”

> The headline is misleading, but: over half of Egyptians polled (and oh, do I want to see how that poll was set up) favor dissolving the 1973 peace treaty with Israel.

> Old news (relatively speaking), but over 500 Afghan prisoners were rescued by the Taliban in Khandahar yesterday. Apparently the Taliban dug their way in through a 1,050-foot tunnel over the course of five months.

> At least 221 Syrians have gone missing in the last three days of government crackdown. Syrian authorities claim no knowledge of their whereabouts. There are reports of friends and family attempting to inquire at security checkpoints being imprisoned and beaten.
